John R. Platt

PRESIDENT

Currently retired, John was a pharmacy owner and District Manager for Walgreens in Palm Beach County, Florida. His wife is hearing impaired and benefits from her relationship with her service dog, Sandi. John’s business and managerial skills have come in handy during his service on the board of directors. John is passionate about providing quality training and service dogs for veterans in need.

James Pabey, BBAM

VICE PRESIDENT

James Pabey was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico on July 29, 1985. During his childhood, he spent his time playing baseball and dreaming of becoming a professional baseball player. Until one day he saw a TV commercial about the Marine Corps. That day, he told his father he wanted to become a Marine.

In December 2003, Mr. Pabey enlisted into the Marine Corps. In June 2004, he attended basic training at Parris Island, South Carolina. In January 2005, Lance Corporal Pabey reported to 2nd Transportation Battalion, 2nd Marine Logistics at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina where he was assigned to the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit. While serving in the 26th Marine Expeditionary unit, he was deployed to Iraq, Kuwait, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and other countries during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

In October 2009, Corporal Pabey was assigned to 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion, 2nd Marine Division Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. During his time in 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion, Sergeant Pabey was deployed twice to the Helmand Province, Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom where he served as Operation Chief and Platoon Sergeant for Alpha Company Direct Support Platoon. In January 2011, Sergeant Pabey reported to Marine Corp Drill Instructor School at Parris Island, South Carolina. During his time as a Drill Instructor, Senior Drill Instructor, Marine Corps Martial Arts Instructor and Company Operation Chief Sergeant Pabey trained 418 civilians into United Stated Marines.

In October 2014, Sergeant Pabey reported to 451 Combat Logistics Battalion, 4th Marine Logistics Group in Orlando, Florida where he was assigned as a Platoon Sergeant and the Company Martial Arts Instructor. In May 2016, Sergeant was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant and assigned as a Company Career Planer.

In August 2017, Staff Sergeant Pabey was Honorably Discharged of the Marine Corps. He continues to fulfill his personal mission to help and assist his brothers and sisters in arms as an employee at the West Palm Beach VA Healthcare System. Currently, he serves as the Supervisor for the VA Community Care Department. 

​

Currently, Staff Sergeant Pabey is married, has two daughters, and lives in Loxahatchee where he continues to serve his community as High School Softball Coach and volunteers with a non-profit, dog rescue called Second Chance for Puppies

Heidi Maller

SECRETARY

Heidi has been an active member of the south Florida community for 34 years. Her three sons and two dogs keep her busy. Paws 4 Liberty is important to Heidi and her family, because they see it as a testament of the power of the bond between humans and animals.

Joseph D. Rainey

DIRECTOR

Joe served as a tanker in the U.S. Marine Corps until a stateside accident cut his service short. Paws 4 Liberty trained his first service dog, “Tanker,” in 2009. After many years together, Joe lost Tanker to cancer in 2020. Now, he has “Stitch,” another service dog in-training from Paws 4 Liberty. Joe loves to connect with other veterans and help them find the assistance they need by partnering with well-trained service dogs.
